The SPICEE Overnight Program was founded in 2002 by a group of diverse students who saw a need to increase the enrollment of underrepresented and underserved students in higher education. Originally serving a limited number of local students, the program has steadily grown to serve students throughout California. Today, the SPICEE Overnight Program continues to offer participants with experiences rooted in social justice, student empowerment, and multiculturalism. The SPICEE Overnight Program has also partnered with the Jacobs School of Engineering, the Raza Resource Centro, and the LGBTQ Resource Center to offer virtual activities and workshops that are culturally relevant and academically based. Hosts and prospective students (Hostees) have the option of specifying which track they would like to participate in.

We foster an inclusive and welcoming community, increase retention and graduation rates, and promote a sustainable culture of academic excellence among all engineering students at UC San Diego. The IDEA Center provides engineering students with academic support and social engagement that enhances values of diversity for a global community. IDEA Stands for Inclusion, Diversity, Excellence, and Achievement. Students will engage in activities and attend special events organized by the IDEA Engineering Student Center. They include connecting with current students and fellow high school seniors who have been admitted to engineering majors, networking with student organization leaders, participating in social events, and attending panel sessions on research and summer college transitioning programs. While students will have the opportunity to participate in joint activities with the other track of the Overnight Program, participants of the Jacobs School of Engineering – IDEA Student Center Experience UC San Diego Program will spend most of their time together with the engineering cohort.

Every spring, SPACES partners with the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Black Resource Center (BRC) to offer a unique opportunity for those interested in connecting with the Black community at UC San Diego. This unique opportunity allows participants to connect with current Black students, interact with faculty and staff members, and connect with San Diego community leaders.

Throughout the program, students interact with members of the many Black student organizationsincluding the Black Student Union, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Black Greek Letter Organizations, and more! Students also will engage with a variety of campus resources that support the community and learn more about how to maximize their experience at UC San Diego.

The BSU Experience UC San Diego Program is truly a celebration of your accomplishment of being admitted to a world-class university, and we look forward to welcoming you into our community!
