SPACES Components
Student-Initiated Access and Programs
Mission statement
The Student Initiated Access Programs and Services (SIAPS) is a component of SPACES that seeks to demystify the college experience by empowering students and promoting access to higher education. SIAPS empowers students in K-12, community college, undergraduate programs, and community based partnerships from low income communities of color in the greater San Diego region and state of California. As a program created by students for students, we aim to reduce barriers to education by serving marginalized communities and promoting a holistic approach to learning and development. Through services, such as student panels and mxntorship programs, we aim to connect students with resources that would encourage them to pursue different opportunities such as trade school, workforce, and more. SIAPS seeks to support students on their journey of self-discovery, helping them feel capable and ready to take steps into achieving their academic, career or personal goals The main goal is to create a brave space that welcomes and diversifies academic environments for students.
Student-Initiated Programs for Holistic Retention
Mission statement
Student-Initiated Programs for Holistic Retention (SIPHR) is a student-initiated and student-run service that functions to increase the retention rates of UCSD undergraduates. SIPHR will be proactive at preventing academic setbacks and create a more inclusive campus environment for but not exclusive to underserved and under-resourced communities, including students from low income, first generation, non-traditional, undocumented, disabled communities of color. Through peer-to-peer programming, political empowerment, book-lending, and mxntorship programs, SIPHR provides ground up support, filling in gaps that the institution creates.
Student-Initiated Access and Programs
Mission statement
In 2017, the Student Programs Ignited for Community Engagement & Education (SPICEE) component was established to address the lack of community engagement and education programs within SPACES. SPICEE hosts student-led, community-oriented programs and maintains relationships with CORE organizations, resource centers, and on-campus departments. Through our programs, SPICEE empowers students to engage in activism, mxntorship, and professional development opportunities to cultivate community engagement and critical thinking through intersectional dialogue.
